There are two stories in the DI which taken independently are meaningless. However, when you look at them as part of the overall puzzle it makes you scratch your head about if the City really has a clue.
First, there is the closure of Diamond Motors. The new car dealers are among the highest sales tax producers for the City. Remember a few months back when Staheli (the Budget Officer) said there was going to be an already decline of at least $80,000 in the first quarter? At mid-year I think he said the projection was $200K behind budget estimate?
Second, the Police Chief is asking for an additional police officer – unless Ron Strand can show this is a revenue neutral addition we have to question the wisdom of this burdensome increase during this financial troubling time. Further this will create a burden for the City’s struggling General Fund. Now Police want to increase staffing. What are they thinking!
